In a letter dated Wednesday 21st June, 2017 and addressed to the students’ fraternity of Makerere University, the dean of students Mr. Cyriaco Kabagambe has said that the semester officially closes on Saturday 24th June, 2017. To the hall residing students, breakfast shall be the only meal served that day as they expect everyone to have vacated by midday save for those that have papers on Saturday and Sunday who are required to have registered with their respective wardens for appropriate consideration.
The students who still have to attend to the recess term that is expected to run upto 12th August 2017, will have to move to their required places of residences during that time.
Mulago’s Galloway hostel shall accommodate the medical students, Kabanyolo in Gayaza will have Horticulture, Agriculture and Food Science and Nutrition students.
The rest of the courses with a recess programme shall be accommodated within Livingstone, Lumumba and Mary Stuart halls of residence.
Recess, besides the courses mentioned above also has Engineering students, Veterinary Medicine students, Information Technology among others.
The aim for recess is to allow room for practical related studies and workshops.
Students get hands on experience during this time in preparation for internships and the job market.
This time however, it is going to be shortlived because unlike the times when they would have June, July and August, it is only July that they have this time after the study calendar was altered by the presidential directive to close the institution last year in November.
