Makerere University administration has fired a minimum of 5 staff following intense investigation on cases related to sexual harassment at the premier institution.
Of the six who have been relieved of their duties, two were non-teaching staff whereas 4 were teaching staff.
The sexual harassment cases which materialized into the sacking were committed in the years 2018 and 2022, according to the University’s management.
This website’s efforts to identify the particular dismissed staff were futile.
The director of Gender Mainstreaming Directorate at Makerere, Dr Euzobia Mugisha Baine revealed that five cases were investigated to conclusion – involving two students and three staff whereas the rest are still under probe.
For one to be charged with a sexual harassment case, the university states that he/she will have made undesirable sexual advances, requested for sexual favors or inappropriate physical, verbal, or non-verbal conduct of a sexual nature. The matters cut across lecturer-lecturer, lecturer to student, administrator to student.
The students at the institution believe that the ‘private’ meet-ups between lecturers and students are highly to blame for the vice.
