In a scandal rocking Kampala’s academic and social circles, Prof. Badru Kateregga, founder of Kampala University, has made explosive claims against his estranged wife, Jolly Shubaiha Kateregga, accusing her of locking him out of his Buziga residence and making off with his most valuable possessions.
According to Prof. Kateregga, the fallout with his wife has spiraled into what he describes as an orchestrated heist. He claims that Jolly not only barred him from accessing his home but also allegedly looted a fleet of luxury vehicles, academic records, and large sums of cash — all smuggled across the border into Rwanda.
Among the items allegedly taken:
- A Range Rover Vogue
- A Toyota Land Cruiser V8
- A Jeep
- Multiple land titles
- Academic documents and Kampala University paperwork
- Cash in both Ugandan shillings and US dollars
“She blocked me from accessing my home. She took everything — documents, vehicles, and money — and smuggled it to Rwanda. My entire academic legacy and personal life are in chaos,” Prof. Kateregga said in a now-viral video.
CID ACCUSED OF INACTION DESPITE IGP DIRECTIVE
But Prof. Kateregga’s fury doesn’t end with his ex-wife. He has also directed sharp criticism at the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) of the Uganda Police, claiming that despite a directive from the Inspector General of Police, no action has been taken.
“I’ve written. I’ve called. I’ve waited. But nothing has been done. Even after the IGP gave clear instructions, CID has done nothing,” he said.
POLICE SAYS IT’S A CIVIL MATTER
In response, the Uganda Police Force issued a press statement on July 25, 2025, confirming that the matter had been formally reported and investigated under file CID HQRS/GEF 306/204. However, police clarified that following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the dispute was classified as a civil matter rooted in property ownership and management.
“The expectation by Prof. Kateregga that police or CID, in particular, has powers to remove Mrs. Jolly Kateregga from the premises is outside our mandate,” the statement read.
Police emphasized that they cannot alter the possession of property without a court order and urged both parties to seek redress through lawful avenues.
PUBLIC OUTCRY AND ONLINE FIRESTORM
The saga has ignited heated debate across social media, with many questioning how such high-value assets, including vehicles and confidential academic documents, could be transported out of the country without triggering alarms.
Others have rallied behind the veteran academic, demanding greater accountability from law enforcement.
A LEGACY IN TURMOIL
As the situation unfolds, Prof. Kateregga is expected to escalate the matter through the courts in a bid to reclaim his assets and restore his reputation. The scandal continues to cast a shadow over one of Uganda’s most prominent academic families.
