Its official! Kwepena, an event where African indigenous games are celebrated will return this weekend in a game-filled festival. While addressing the press at Uganda Museum today, Simon Peter Tumukunde announced that Kwepena will be held this Sunday, 6th March 2022 at Uganda Museum.
According to Tumukunde, there are other African games to be played on that day besides Kwepena. Other games include; duulu, sonko, buladda, omweso, jump rope, tag of war, sack race, blind race, three-legged race, a challenge course, matatu, ludo, kyokolo, among others.
Additionally, revelers will get an opportunity to jam to cool music performed by singer Kohen Jaycee and non-stop tunes mixed by DJ Nyowe.
“We welcome anyone who wants to come, play and take part in competitions. You can come with your family, show your children how these games are played.” Tumukunde told journalists.
“The space is big enough for everyone, we have enough poles, enough gameplay equipment that is needed for any sport.” He added.
The organizers also revealed that playing Kwepena and other African games comes with a lot of health benefits. It is said that the games’ impact on your health can be felt within 15 minutes of the game.
Kwepena, which is set to be recognized by the Uganda National Council of Sports has about 15 clubs around Kampala. The game is played in over 25 schools in Uganda with a number of clubs set up across the country.
On Sunday, revelers will pay only UGX 15k at the entrance while online tickets go for just 10k via https://appabout.africa/kwepena/ .
