The highly anticipated Skillz Dance Festival, now in its seventh edition, was officially launched on September 18, 2024, and promises to be a spectacular celebration of African dance, culture, and community. Scheduled to take place from October 18 to 20, the festival will bring together dancers from all over Africa for three days of intense competition, collaboration, and connection.

Recognized as one of the most prominent dance festivals on the continent, Skillz Dance Festival has grown significantly over the years. With support from the British Council through its “Festival Connects Fund” initiative, this year’s festival is one of seven African festivals to receive grants aimed at building new and exciting partnerships both locally and internationally. The festival is set to make massive connections with other festivals and events across the region, elevating the profile of African dance on a global stage.

This year’s event will feature four major competitions that are sure to captivate audiences: the Ultimate Skillz Breaking Battles, Afro-Fusion Battles, Urban Freestyle Battles, and the highly anticipated Next Move Battles. These competitions will showcase the very best talent in African dance, combining traditional moves with modern styles to celebrate the rich diversity of dance culture across the continent.

The official launch, held at the British Council in Kamwokya, Kampala, featured vibrant performances from various dance troupes. Among the highlights was a performance by Sosolya Udungu, a troupe made up primarily of children, who delivered a powerful routine addressing environmental issues like climate change and corruption. The performance underscored the festival’s commitment to using art and dance as tools for social commentary and change.

In line with this theme, Skillz Dance Festival has partnered with IGC Fashion to raise awareness about the impact of fashion on climate change and the global waste crisis. Through dance and creative expression, the festival seeks to shine a light on the interconnectedness of art, fashion, and the environment.

Festival organizers expressed their gratitude for the continued support from sponsors and partners and are thrilled to host another edition that will not only entertain but also inspire and connect communities. The Skillz Dance Festival.
