Having raised hopes of many residents in Soroti, the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has revealed that the newly constructed Soroti University is not yet ready to admit students. Through their executive director Prof. John Opuda-Asibo, NCHE has said that the University still lacks lecturers and facilities which are the key requirements for every higher institution of learning.
“From 2015 to 2017, a number of programmes were sent by the university for accreditation but the institution lacked key requirements including lecturers and facilities. When they are ready, we will go and inspect before we can allow them to open. As of now, they are not ready” Opuda revealed.
However, Soroti University’s Vice Chancellor says that installation of the remaining equipment will be done by the end of June to allow admission of its pioneer students by August this year. Under President Museveni’s suggestion, Soroti University was established to major in science programmes like nursing, medicine, electronics, computer engineering and other science related programmes.
According to the Soroti University Council Chairperson Francis Lubanga, a number of programs were sent to NCHE for accreditation but only Business and Education courses were accredited. Lubanga added that some courses like Bachelor of medicine, Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, BSc. in nursing among others are set to be accredited soon.
We will keep you posted.
