Three Soroti University officials, who were recently charged over abuse of office and theft of tax payers’ money have been slapped with a fresh fraud case, Campus Bee has learned.
The accused include James Odongo (internal auditor), Gilbert Denis Otim (acting bursar) and Samuel Omoding (Acting University Secretary) who on Tuesday appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court based in Kololo.
The trio was charged with misappropriation of more than Shs48 million which Omoding approved as facilitation to an unauthorized travel to Morocco. The three however denied the charges of abuse of office, causing financial loss and conspiracy to defraud before Grade One Magistrate Sarah Namusobya before securing bail worth Shs 500,000 each.
The State alleges that the three officials unlawfully requisitioned, approved and effected payment of the money to themselves as facilitation for acquisition of passports and travel to Morocco to attend the 5th African Congress of Accountants 2019 programme.
It should be recalled that the trio was jailed over theft of Shs15.9 million and they had appeared before Grade One Magistrate Moses Nabende to apply for bail, little did they know that they will be slapped with new charges.
Their first case was extended to January 10 to enable the prosecution conclude its inquiries.
