Campus Bee yesterday took it back to high school as St Kizito High School Namugongo held the official ceremony for the launch of their annual fish festival. The festival is held every year where students of the Namugogo-based high school harvest and feast on their own grown fish.
The ceremony was presided over by the Ndejje University Dean Faculty of Agriculture Sciences, Dr Maria Mbatidde as the guest of honor.
While speaking to Campus Bee, the head teacher of St Kizito high, Mr. Kazibwe Ezekiel revealed that the school has a number of projects that are aimed at equipping students with practical skills in a bid to solve the unemployment problem, and fishing is among them.
“Here at St Kizito, we have a number of projects that are aimed at imparting practical skills into our learners so that at the end of the day these people can have those skills that can help them function in the society. With the increased level of unemployment, and also a number of things that may consume the time of the youth, we decided to equip them with skills that will earn them future side income.” Kazibwe revealed.
Speaking of the fish festival that was held yesterday, Thursday, November 29th, Kazibwe noted that they normally stock their fish at the beginning of the year, which they harvest and feast on at the end of the year.
“So for the fish festival today, we are harvesting our fish because we normally stock at the beginning of the year. So at the end of the year, we harvest and feast on them. Today we are feasting on fish that our students have been rearing ever since the year began.” Kazibwe said.
Kazibwe also added that they normally harvest their fish twice a year as he noted that this year’s edition is very special because they decided to officially launch the festival for the outside world to know what goes down at St Kizito. This festival is first of its kind in the country which they think will inspire the youth to do something similar in a bid to generate income.
The event also featured musical performances from John Blaq among other trending musicians in the country. Earlier in the day, various groups of students danced and mimed to their favorite songs at an event hosted by NBS’ MC Ollo alongside his Youth Voice Co-hosts as the event MCs.
