Final year students of St. Lawrence University (SLAU) have cried out for help following the administration’s decision to add an extra UGX 450,000 fees on finalists’ tuition.
According to a statement issued to finalists that Campus Bee has seen, all finalists will pay the said amount in a bid to study smoothly.
“For smooth servicing of the teaching and learning to successfully complete your studies, all finalists will have to pay an additional fee of Ugx 450,000/= on top of their semester tuition fees. Therefore, students who had paid all their tuition and fees will only have to pay Ugx. 450,000/= to enable them complete the semester while those who had not completed, will have to add the same amount to their semester tuition and fees balance.” Part of the document reads.
The university has also vowed to penalize those who fail to pay 30% of their tuition by 2nd November. According to the same document, such students will pay a fine of UGX 30,000 as well as those who fail to clear 60% by 16th November this year.
Meanwhile, those who fail to pay 100% of their tuition will be penalized with a UGX 40,000 fine.
Campus Bee has also received complaints from disgruntled students who accuse the university lecturers of refusing to release their marks over unpaid salaries. The students are in confusion since they haven’t set eyes on their results (for last semester) ahead of the graduation slated for January 14th, 2021.
“Most students have never seen their results and this is the final semester, graduation is 14th January and they claim that the system eats marks so we can’t access them.” A SLAU finalist, who preferred to remain anonymous told this campus news website.
SLAU finalists started reporting to campus on 15th October following President Museveni’s directive to have all final year students resume with their studies. Lectures started on Monday 19th October but students are restless, wondering how they’ll clear the additional UGX 450K.
