Taliku Yilkal, a refugee from Ethiopia and a second year biomedical student at Makerere and has been a resident of Lumumba hall has cried out for help, saying he has nowhere to go after the university closure.
Yilkal is one of the many students who are still stranded and stuck after president Museveni’s November 1, 2016 letter which ordered for the indefinite closure of the university.
Yilkal spent his night in one of the bars around Wandegeya because he had nowhere to stay after police taking over the university.
“The closure was very abrupt, I have no money to move to any place, no relatives to go to and I don’t want to go to the refugee commissioner because the whole process takes a lot of time. For now I have decided to write to the University Vice Chancellor Prof Ddumba Ssentamu to see whether he can reallocate or grant me permission to stay at Lumumba until the university is opened” Yilkal says.
However it should be recalled that Uganda police spokesperson Andrew Kaweesi ordered that there should not be anyone to stay at the campus premises.
For now, Yilkal’s fate is to be determined by Prof Ddumba who will either hear his cry or ignore it.
