Yesterday the Makerere University FDC chapter held a flag bearer debate at Mary Stuart Hall presenting the five guild presidential aspirants to battle out in the party primaries. These included Silvester Sabiiti BJCO 3, Paul Kato BAED 2, Namuganza Florence BJCO 2, Derrick Obeju BAED 2 and Simon Wanyera BAED 2.
The debate was moderated by the famous Samson Kasumba from NBS TV together with Samantha Naluyiima and Joel Musinguzi both from Law school.
The second session, however, ranked got more interesting as all the five candidates agreed to retain strikes as a sustainable action to solve Makerere issues. Derrick Obeju said that there are things that Makerere students can not help doing- like striking. “There are things we can’t do away with as Makerereans. Strikes are part of us,” he submitted.
Florence Namuganza, clarified that MAK students do not strike but they demonstrate. Whereas Paul Kato said, “strikes are a sustainable action only when the other avenues have failed.”
Simon Wanyera also opined; “We strike because the administration doesn’t treat us as stakeholder yet we are the main stakeholders. They always think we are driving our own interests.”
The last section left the debate room in utter shock when the moderators asked the candidates whether or not they would run as independents if they lost the primaries.
All the other four contestants said they wouldn’t run but the self-proclaimed revolutionary son, Simon Wanyera fell short of words until the moderator reminded him about his right not to answer the question.
His stance thus hangs in balance as whether he’ll go run as an independent in case he loses in the primaries.
The FDC primaries are set for 13th March.
