The State Minister for finance Henry Musasizi has confirmed to Parliament that the ministry has finally released funds for the payment of the medical intern’s allowance.
Intern Doctors under the Federation of Uganda Medical Interns (FUMI) and Doctors under the Uganda Medical Association (UMA) had resorted to industrial action with protests against Government’s refusal to pay the medics the money promised to them by the president.
In Parliament, the issue of the medical workers strike was at the forefront again following yesterdays’ request by shadow minister for health minister, Dr. Tomithy Batuwa to have parliament debate the continuous strike and the controversial dismissal of the medicalinterns by the Ministry of Health.
Minister Musasizi had previously revealed that they had received a request from the Ministry of Health to have the medical interns’ funds processed.
The Minister has now confirmed that the striking medical interns will be paid before Christmas.
“We have received a request from the Ministry of Health and by close of business today, the process of releasing the money will have been finalised and the medical interns paid.”
The minister made these remarks while responding to queries from the speaker of parliament Jacob Oulanyah before the debate on the matter was adjourned.
Following the development, the speaker adjourned the matter to allow the Ministry of Health to have a discussion with the leadership of medical workers to end their differences.
Members of parliament blamed the Ministry of health for allowing the issues to go out of hand.
