In a recent development at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), student leaders have issued a three-day ultimatum to the Ministry of Education, urging them to appoint a new principal to replace Prof Wasswa Balunya, whose tenure concluded in May 2023.
The student leaders claim that MUBS students have been grappling with various challenges that Acting Principal Prof Moses Muhwezi, who is currently leading the institution, cannot effectively address due to his limited powers.
Prof Wasswa Balunya’s departure in May created a leadership vacuum at MUBS, and since then, Prof Moses Muhwezi has been holding the position on an acting basis. However, student leaders argue that this interim arrangement has not been effective in addressing the pressing issues facing the institution.
The student leaders’ call for the appointment of a new principal within three days reflects the urgency with which they believe the situation needs to be resolved. They emphasize that a permanent principal with full authority is necessary to implement much-needed changes and improvements at MUBS.
While the Ministry of Education has not yet responded to this ultimatum, it is evident that the concerns of the student leaders reflect the broader sentiment among the student body at MUBS. The students hope that their demand for a new principal will lead to positive changes and improvements within the institution, ultimately enhancing the academic experience for all students.
