Police in Bushenyi District are investigating a shocking case in which a female student at Kampala International University (KIU) was gang-raped in her hostel room by unidentified knife-wielding attackers, who also stole her Samsung A16 mobile phone.
The incident happened on Sunday at around 10:20am at Katungu cell, Ishaka Division, where the victim, a Nigerian national and second-year Law student at KIU Western Campus, resides.
According to police, the young woman reported that the men forced their way into her room, threatened to kill her if she raised the alarm, and then raped her in turns before fleeing with her phone.
She is currently receiving medical treatment at Bushenyi Police Health Centre II, where she was immediately put on post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to reduce the risk of HIV infection.
Greater Bushenyi Region acting police spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, noting that detectives have already visited the crime scene to collect evidence.
“Police are still investigating to have the culprits apprehended and recover the stolen property. We appeal to the general public to covertly volunteer information relating to the ongoing investigation for the victim to get justice,” SP Tayebwa said.
The victim has been issued with a police medical form (PF3), which is provided after medical examination when there is reasonable evidence of assault or sexual violence.
So far, no suspects have been arrested. Police say efforts are underway to track down the attackers and ensure justice for the victim.
