Makerere University vice chancellor, Ddamba Ssentamu along with the Public Universities Admissions Board (PUJAB) were all sweat dripping on Thursday as the court ruled against them on the John Manzi vs Makerere University case. John Manzi a former student of Naalya SSS and procuring fresher at the university had earlier this month sued the institution on grounds that PUJAB had thrown him out on the bachelors of law government sponsorship admission list, instead admitting him for a bachelors in business administration still on government sponsorship yet he’d have the requirements scoring 19 points at UACE and had attained 63% at the law pre – entry examination.
On Thursday court under the guidance of Justice Nyanzi passed verdict ordering the public university to admit Manzi for the law degree on government sponsorship and to pay all the losses he has incurred during the course of his pursuit in this case.
Makerere University lawyer, Pope Ahimbisibwe had argued that Manzi hadn’t followed the right procedures of admission for the law program on government sponsorship.
But Judge Nyanzi down played all Pope claims and ruled that the university acted illegally by using PUJAB as a foundation for denying Manzi admission since Makerere couldn’t show how PUJAB was created to handle student admissions to public universities and what legal instrument it created hence labelling the Joint Admissions Board (PUJAB) as a illegal entity.
This loop hole in the system unearthed with the help of fresher John Manzi and his team could see the public institution face future law suits from unsatisfied students if they don’t rectify the legality of the admissions board (PUJAB).
