Makerere University Electoral Commission yesterday kicked out Simon Wanyera from the list of students vying for the University Guild top seat of the guild president.
The self-proclaimed revolutionary son was kicked out of the race after a screening exercise conducted by Isaac Otuku, the chairman and head of the University EC on allegations of having a bad political background as one of the most notorious strike leaders and experts.
According to a statement released by the electoral commission yesterday, Wanyera was ruled out on grounds that he lacked substantive requirements for eligibility to contest that require one to have a clean record of not being chaotic while at the campus. The same statement also poses pictures of Wanyera holding bananana while being dragged away from the campus by police officers during the fundraising campaign for lecturers fees that was organized by leader of opposition Kizza Besigye last semester.
Wanyera is famous for his involvement in opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) defiance protests in February and March 2016 that followed the Presidential elections. He also has an unbeaten record of cases with the police due to his involvement in past strikes.
However, Wanyera is much loved by many students and has been very instrumental in the students’ fight against the then infamous 60 per cent tuition policy which would later be scrapped off. He has also served the university in different positions including heading the Private Students’ Association.
Among other aspirants that were kicked out of the race include; Bonny Eyen, William Karamagi, Isaac Innocent Ongom and Timothy Sambwa because of lack of the required academic prowess or their “incompetence” and involvement in disrupting the smooth running of the University.
Efforts to get a comment from Wanyera and any of his collogues that were kicked out of the race were futile by press time.
