A Science, Technology, Engineering Innovation center was this week commissioned in Kiruhura District aimed at enhancing innovation and design skill in Uganda.
In a ceremony presided over by Head of State, President Yoweri Museveni, alongside first lady Janet Kataaha who doubles as Minister of Education and Sports, H.E Museveni laid a foundation stone on one of the blocks of the center (National Science, Technology, Engineering And Innovation Centre -NSTEIC) established under the Skills Enhancement Project (STEP)
Speaking at the commissioning, Mr Museveni explained that the facility will serve as a standard training point for person(s) who will have attained formal education in technical fields. He related it to the Law development center which equips law graduates with practical techniques before they carry out their profession in the country.
“This is like the Law Development Centre for lawyers. A lawyer is trained academically in the law school but before he goes to courts, he must learn the practical techniques of being a lawyer in Uganda. Even if you are trained wherever you are trained, you must attend LDC in order to operate here,” he explained.
In attendance as well, was Minister for Science and Technology & Innovation – Dr Monica Musenero who said that the centre will bridge the gap between the skills needed on the technical market to those of people especially the youth who are more theoretical.
“This is an actual manufacturing facility, and the trainees are equiped on the job. this became necessary when we discovered that our engineers take an average of four years to be allow to touch the real equipment,” Dr Musenero said.
This innovations center is positioned in Rwebitete, Sanga Town Council in Kiruhura District with anticipation that the locals and nationals benefit from it.
