Professor Jasper Ogwal Okeng has expressed his disappointment with students who apply to Lira University as a last resort having failed to secure admission at other universities such as Makerere.
Prof. Ogwal said students in Lango are missing out on opportunities such as loan schemes because they apply late to join the university, their admissions having been bounced elsewhere.
“Some students first try elsewhere like Makerere University for admission then resort to us after missing the opportunity there hence late to get the government loan scheme when we get them here because deadlines will have passed,” Prof Ogwal said.
Professor Ogwal expressed his dismay during the official opening ceremony of Lira University’s multi-billion storage building.
The Shs7.1 billion 3-floor building will have new offices, laboratories and student lecture rooms.
Prof. Ogwal said that they used students’ fees and Government funds to construct the new block.
“Our staff sacrificed allowances in preference for completion of this magnificent building,” he added.
The construction started in 2018 with about sh3.6 Billion in the first phase and finally shs3.5 Billion in the second and the last phases.
The new storage building will not only add beauty to Lira University but also increase the university’s capacity to accommodate more students with an increase in lecture rooms.
