Students with Dead Years Barred from Contesting at Makerere

Were Salim, Kato Paul, Roy Ssemboga, Baala David Bwiruka and Ivan Bwoowe. These are the last five guild presidents Makerere University has had and what’s surprising, only one (Kato Paul) attained the seat in his normal time without having to prolong his stay there unnecessarily.

This trend, however, will no longer see the light after the university council passed fresh regulations to guide guild elections and prohibited it.
In the regulations, that have been gazetted in the Uganda Gazette, all students that exceed their time at the university will not be eligible to stand.

Regulation 5 (1) (a) (vi), a student that intends to contest for the position of guild president or Guild Representative Councillor “shall not have exceeded the study period of their program on account of academic related challenges including retakes, stay put or refusal to register some course units” the regulations state in part.

Consequently, majority of the intending contestants in the forthcoming elections are not eligible to run for presidency and will have to forego preparation of the same.
The regulations come as part of the new administrative techniques that Architecture professor Barnabas Nawangwe has deployed in his term of office as vice chancellor.
