A Mukono court has further remanded a 21-year-old man accused of murdering former Uganda Christian University (UCU) Director of Student Affairs, Pamela Ruth Tumwebaze.

Grade One Magistrate Praise Ahurira on Thursday ordered that Dak Hussein Taewaiko remain on remand until April 8, 2026, as investigations into the case continue.

Taewaiko appeared before the court for mention of charges that include murder and aggravated robbery. The prosecution, led by Senior Resident State Attorney Josephine Nanyonga, told court that inquiries into the matter are still ongoing and requested more time, which the magistrate granted.

The suspect was subsequently returned to Luzira Prison.

Unlike his earlier court appearance on February 20, when he was escorted under heavy guard by the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JATT), Taewaiko was this time brought to court by routine prison warders. He briefly waited on the court veranda before being ushered into the magistrate’s chambers, where the charges were formally read.

The proceedings were attended by members of Tumwebaze’s family, who followed the session in silence, visibly shaken by the loss.

Tumwebaze, 46, was killed in the early hours of February 11, 2026, at her home in Gwafu West Cell, Goma Division in Mukono District. According to police reports, an assailant broke into the residence while she was asleep, overpowered her, and strangled her to death.

The attacker is said to have later confronted the house help, demanding keys and valuables before fleeing the scene. Items reportedly stolen include a mobile phone and a laptop bag. The suspect allegedly escaped while dressed in some of the victim’s clothing.

Tumwebaze was rushed to Mukono Namirembe Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Her killing sent shockwaves through Uganda Christian University, where she had served as Director of Student Affairs. Colleagues and students remember her as a dedicated administrator who played a key role in shaping student welfare, discipline, and campus life.

The case remains under active investigation.
