The nine students of Makerere University who were suspended three weeks ago by the vice chancellor for allegedly destroying the university’s property during the fees- must- fall strike have been summoned to appear before the students’ disciplinary committee today,14th November.
The five member disciplinary committee that will sit in the Senior Common Room in the main building is going to be chaired by the former grade one magistrate Mr. Precious Ngabirano. The university is to be represented by it’s Director of Legal Affairs, Mr. Henry Mwebe.
Those suspended include David Musiri ( Bachelor of Commerce), Ssasirabo Mollie Siperia (Bachelor of Industrial Psychology), Simon Senoga (Bachelor of Industrial and Organizational Psychology), Ivan Kyeyune (Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences), Frank Bwambale (Bachelor of Journalism and Communication), Job Dhabona (Bachelor of Community Psychology), Seiz Mutatiina (Bachelor of Commerce), Rogers Mbajjo Ssebiraro (Bachelor of Quantitative Economics) and Derick Ojambo Wabwiire( Bachelor of Records and Archives Management).
It should also be remembered that some of these students are still bedridden as a result of injuries sustained from the police and military brutality during the strike.
The students are accused of a litany of offences including generating and sending inflammatory messages on social media with an intention of inciting violence, causing anarchy, destruction of life and property.
“If found guilty, the students will face grave sanctions including expulsion and referral to court for prosecution as criminal suspects.” Isaac Ssemakadde of the Centre for Legal Aid who represents the group said.
