Teachers allover the world have been celebrating World Teachers Day but a one ‘hardheaded’ Obed Obedgiu Derrick Kwokuboth the ‘oldest’ teacher trainee at Makerere University has been cursing and calling for the abolition of the teaching profession.
Makerere university’s one-time guild aspirant who was dragged out of the race took his intellectual argument to Facebook as he wrote up a post trashing the profession he has been working tirelessly to join.
“Teachers and teacher trainees should be fully incorporated into carpentry and coffin making, transportation business, farming, housekeeping, security and market vending.’ Obed fumed in a Facebook post dated October 5th.
Besides the post is a picture of him (Obed) carrying a bunch of matooke; which he says is his next venture after the teaching profession failing him.
While speaking to campus bee, Obed lamented that coffin making has been the most lucrative business during this period (covid19). “Some teachers in Mukono already ventured in it.” he defended.
According to current statistics, a number of private teachers have quit the profession and joined odd jobs such as bricklaying and carpentry in order to survive such hard times of covid-19.
Having closed learning institution in order to curb the spread of covid-19, institutions of learning have been crippling to survive and with this come unforeseen circumstances such as teachers losing jobs.
As learning institutions (primary and secondary) await reopening in January next year, its still uncertain whether most teachers will get back to the classroom or not.
