After yesterday’s clash of the Titans at Nkrumah Hall, one would think the gallant intellectuals learnt a thing or two about the art of calmness and amicably solving small zibs. But no, a hall resident would do anything to have visiting camps respect the hosting candidates whose grass-root support lies in the hall of residence where they are attached.
The situation at the Mary Stuart Hall was so calm and most supporters were excited this being an open ground where they can uncontrollably display their candidates’ posters and other campaign material. Mary Stuart females’ Hall is historically a neighbor and spouse to Lumumba Males’ hall which subjects it to protection from the Gongom Guard Brigade (GGB).
The cool situation at around 6pm today wasn’t given an opportunity to last when candidate Kinene Edward Ssemakula’s camp from University Hall(UH) came with legs kissing the air being airlifted by supporters the same way MP Evelyn Anite was exalted last year.
The GGB couldn’t allow this glorification to disrupt the already attentive supporters and candidates who had arrived on time. The Kinene camp was neither ready to drop their man unless they were allowed to fly him up to his seat.
They really had some balls to dare the GGB and the usual hard way of rubbing shoulders escalated. One two, three four blows, pulling and police intervened with the only way to save the situation: bullets were first fired in the air to disperse the two camps. Instead, the supporters ran off the ground leaving the fighting camps with ample space to exchange kicks now.
Police then applied tear gas canisters amidst karate and taikondo applied by Police to separate the fighting students. The rally grounds being in an ally of some sort, it looked like the same scenario that happened in Parliament- just that the SFC this time was in police uniform.
The tear gas and bullets marked the end of today’s rally where most of the contestants left without holding the microphone.
