The State Minister for Higher Education, Dr Chrysostom Muyingo has made it clear to the public that there is no money to settle the salaries of private school’s teachers, following their requests to government.

According to the minister, if government had enough money, the requests would have been granted and also given to workers in other sectors as well.

He said most of the money in the country’s budget has been allocated to the fight of COVID-19 and locusts that invaded the country earlier this year.

“I would love it, but is it possible? Our budget had a lot of problems. It has focused on the COVID-19 fight, locusts. I look at these teachers who should be helped and feel the pain. But there are other workers who were laid off. If money was available, they would be supported with immediate effect. But you know how small our resource envelope is” said Dr Muyingo, in response to questions from the press on Wednesday.

Private School teachers under the National Private Education Institutions Association (NPEIA) asked the government to pay salaries of at least 300,000 teachers for a year.

Dr. Muyingo adds that the teachers requests will be possible if a big donation comes to the country.
