A Makerere University graduand who fell victim to a petty theft found himself at the center of an unusual act of remorse when the thief, realizing the dire financial situation of the graduand, returned the stolen property.
Identified as Ishmael Abenaitwe, the graduand had been left in tears after he lost his phone (Infinix model) and other valuables to the thief during the night. Distraught and frustrated, Ishmael took to his X account, using his laptop to report the incident hoping for some assistance of recovering the items.
After a while, this graduand says he received communication through his neighbor, indicating his items had been returned at a specific spot (saloon) with a handwritten note attached. The graduand suggests that the communication could have been sent through this neighbor because he (neighbor) was the last person the graduand had spoken to on his phone’s call/text log.
Upon following the directions in the message, the graduand says he received the items with the hand-written note that read, “Saw your posts crying online about an android and realized you were too broke. Have back your things. Next time don’t walk in the night”
This incident, while unusual, has stirred mixed reactions over sincerity of the report and (if true) the remorse the thief expressed towards the struggling graduand.
The victim (Ishmael) is expected to graduate at the end of this month at Makerere 74th Graduation ceremony. We wish him the best!
