Students who will report this year to offer surveying as a course at Ndejje University will find life hard especially during practical as thieves have stolen all the surveying instruments and equipment which students have been using to aide their practicals.
The thieves who broke security of the main complex and the main building of the university which is guarded by police officers at night or security personnel employed by the university. Among the items stolen include three total stations, several dumpy levels and their staff which are very expensive machines totaling to a tune of over 300million shillings.
On the fateful day last week, thieves descended on the surveying office which sits at the basement of the building with an office window facing the back of the main building where askaris don’t have a view of what is happening. However, security cameras are installed in that area but it was surprising to find out that no images of the robbers were found on the camera system.
One security guard employed by the university to guard the complex who asked for anonymity expressed his disappointment with the security system of the main campus.
“The university has security cameras only installed at corners of the building, what if a thief comes through the other doors that have no cameras? I am not happy with the security system and some lecturers are stubborn to the extent that some forget to lock their offices,” he told our reporter.
Although it’s not yet clear how the thieves beat up the security to open the surveying office of the university, efforts to get a comment from the surveying lecturer who uses the office proved futile as her known phones are off. It was also revealed that most askaris guarding the main complex dose off in the night and fail to perform their duties.
However, a close source at the university admitted the loopholes in the university security system and that the lecturer whom they stole from her office will have to pay and incur all the expenses and loses arising from the stolen items.
