Makerere University Chancellor Crispus Kiyonga has urged graduates to embrace creativity and self-reliance, acknowledging that the job market cannot absorb all university graduates.
Dr Kiyonga made the remarks during the university’s 76th graduation ceremony, where thousands of students are being conferred upon degrees and diplomas.
Earlier, Joyce Moriku Kaducu, the State Minister for Primary Education, representing Janet Museveni, together with Dr Kiyonga, led the academic procession to the ceremony currently taking place at the university’s main campus.
Create Your Own Opportunities
Addressing the graduates, Dr Kiyonga acknowledged the realities of youth unemployment but emphasized that university education equips students with the tools to innovate and create opportunities.
“It is true that the job market is not enough to absorb all of you. However, the knowledge you have acquired at the University is quite empowering and should enable you to think creatively,” he said.
He encouraged graduates to explore entrepreneurship and collaborative ventures instead of solely depending on formal employment.
“You can, for instance, create work for yourself on your own, singularly or in groups. Use the knowledge and skills that you have acquired for the benefit of your family and society in general,” he added.
Call for Innovation and Impact
The Chancellor stressed that higher education should go beyond preparing students for jobs, urging them to become problem-solvers and change-makers in their communities.
The ceremony marks the 76th graduation milestone for Makerere University, Uganda’s oldest and largest public university, as it continues to produce graduates expected to contribute to national development in various sectors.
The graduation events are ongoing at the university’s Freedom Square, drawing government officials, university leaders, parents, and well-wishers.
