About five days ago, there was a public call for people to attend a presentation about the UN Volunteer Programme dubbed the ‘UN Volunteer Briefing’ that was slated for 11:00am today.
To become a UN Volunteer, you must be between the age of 18-29 years and should be a youth determined to engage in global development and peace initiatives around the globe.
Early this morning, thousands of young people stormed the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) offices at Plot 11, Yusuf Lule Road in an effort of getting into the UN Volunteer Programme.
The briefing was supposed to start at 11:00am but people were there as early as 6:00am and many are still showing up. This has caused a slight backlog resulting to a big number of people getting stuck outside the gate. Apparently, UN seeks to recruit only 150 youths.
Many young people are unemployed and are in search of any gig that can assure them a somewhat steady income. UNDP probably didn’t expect such a massive turn up- they must be overwhelmed.
“Apparently, the UN Volunteer briefing programme has been going on for the past months but it’s only this time that they advertised hence attracting thousands of young people,” a source close to us disclosed.
It’s always good to see youths getting up to in pursuit of something productive to do.
