Students at one of Uganda’s public universities, Busitema were left in shock on Friday evening after three of their colleagues drowned at Sangalo beach.
According to Grace Waiswa, a witness and a student at Busitema university, these students identified as Mwesigye Jim Reeves, a fourth year, Emolu Nathan a year one student both offering engineering in water resources and Demosha Asiimwe, also a first year student offering a bachelor of engineering in mining had all gone to Sangalo sand beach to attend a handover party of the Teso Students Association.
The students were in the water swimming when they were reportedly swept away by a strong wave.
The intended fun later turned into sorrow when one of the three bodies belonging to Mwesigye was discovered floating in water attracting rescuers. The party goers then realized the other two students with whom he was with in water were also missing.
Godfrey Chope, the OC police marines at Majanji landing site confirmed the death of the three students. He said they had recovered two bodies; Emolu and Mwesigwa.
Chope said he had on several occasions warned the beach management to provide life saver jackets and to mark the swimming points with
balloons but they had not taken heed of his warnings.
