Police yesterday arrested three Ndejje University students
who stormed the office of the prime minister in the morning carrying placards and demanding to see the minister of Education, Mrs. Janet Kataha Museveni.
The students are Steven Niwamanya, the Guild speaker Ndejje
University, Phiona Kukunda and Ferdinand Ampaire, third and fourth year civil engineering students respectively.
They were arrested outside Education Ministry as they tried to access the premises at around mid day yesterday. They were carrying placards with the words: “Take us back to
school minister”.
It appears that these students wanted intervention from the minister into matters that led to their suspension from the university last semester. Niwamanya was a guild aspirant last year while Ampaire contested for president, Ndejje University Engineering and Survey Students Association (NUWESA) but both did not make it.
Consequently, they were suspended after investigations found them guilty of involving themselves in the strike that occurred last semester on June 8 that left University property destroyed.
During the same semester, a couple of other students were suspended and given a full dead year as well as asked to pay a heavy fine of shs 750,000 after the University council found them guilty of participating in the same strike.
By Press time, the university administration had not given any comment about the arrest of these students. The three
are still being held at Central Police Station awaiting
trial.
