University this year has been off the radar as regards innovations unlike the past years that saw the coming of Kiira EV and quite a number of innovations. Well, trust Makerere University, the Hotbed of innovations as they continue to bring fine brains who somewhat pull off amazing innovations.
As the year 2015 comes to an end, there are a number of innovations that have seen themselves emanate thanks to the young minds that seek to make a positive change in the environment you and I live in.
Campusbee reviews five of the most outstanding innovations that have sprung up from Universities.
1. Makerere University students fight Vaginal Bacteria using IT.
It’s not all about being feminist whatsoever or trying to support the women emancipation in anyway but if anyone as regards innovation deserves a kudos then these ladies from MUK deserve it in bulk. This group of six fine ladies from Makerere University; Bridget Mendoza, Margaret Nanyombi, Esther Ndagire, Jackeline Namanda, Pauline Nairuba and Winfred Nafula are the sole brains behind Her Health Uganda and the BVKIT that Uganda will someday be grateful for thanks to their efforts.
The ladies from the hill of the learned, Makerere University have a vision to help fully fight Vaginal Bacteria someday and if their innovation lands the right resources and in the eyes of visionary people, then their idea is bond to blossom someday. The top spot of innovations of the year goes to the fine ladies.
2. Makerere University students fight Breast Cancer Using IT
If innovations are to be on point, then this here is one hell of an innovation from Makerere. There lies a seedling of great importance that continues to seemingly germinate with a fine stem of benefits and leafs of rewards. From the hill of the learned, there teamed up two friends David Mwesigwa and Morris Atwiine both from the faculty of computing at Makerere University to venture in what could be a better innovation and the next necessary remedy to Africa’s deadly neglected disease which is breast cancer.
Because Morris had witnessed a relative succumb to the deadly cancer, he was convinced that sitting back arms folded was never the best thing to do but rather be the change that someday the world will appreciate.
He together with his friend teamed up to make a software app that helps in early detection of breast cancer. As a team of young IT experts, they are helping solve the jigsaw that will someday contend this deadly disease. Breast IT takes number two this year!
3. Makerere Student Develops App that detects Pneumonia.
Because pneumonia has claimed hundreds of lives in Uganda every year, a group of students of Makerere University Olivia Koburongo, Brian Turyabagye, Besufekad Shifferaw Viola Akangumya and Angella Namwase saw it fit and came up with an app, Mama-Ope, that helps diagnose the disease earlier in young children.
Mama-Ope is an innovation that was born out of an entry of MAK students in the Big Ideas Innovations competition. This global online competition was organized by University of California, Berkeley with support from USAID, Charles Schwab Foundation and Blum Centre for Innovations. Mama-Ope is a pneumonia kit for diagnosis in young children.
For the rich minds from Makerere University, pneumonia woes could be long gone thanks to Makerere University Minds.
4. Kyambogo University Student makes spy drone.
From the hotbed of engineering Kyambogo University, a one Lucky Mwaka, a first year student at Kyambogo University built a spy drone and robot. The student pursuing an ordinary diploma in mechanical engineering showed the world that he doesn’t have to reach a far distance to have this sort of innovation done.
He put together a remote circuit, a mortar, Rectifier Bridge and ammeter which helped him build the drone. Maybe someday he will build what will help change the environment at large. Another reason he made it to the list is that such kind of innovation is not one that you occasionally see.
5. Makerere Students create a humor computer software application
Mark Zuckerberg woke up some day and from his joke of a thought, we now have a darling Facebook! In the same light, a group of Makerere University chaps; Okello Joseph doing Bachelor in Electrical Engineering, Mugenyie Columbus, Tumwebaze Lebriand doing Bachelor in Computer Science and Abala Nicholas offering a Bachelor in Land Economics all going to their Second year created a comedy/humor software application.
The moral behind the app was to build a platform where anyone would share hilarious jokes for others to crack a rib. The App named Craqit gets its name from the idea of cracking jokes. The trio once joked at a night out and when they sobered up the next morning, they rolled up sleeves, joined ideas and made what Craqit is today.
Well there you got it. Maybe the best ideas are bred from Bars. Ohh happy New Year!
