Michelle Obama, a former first lady of the United States Of America and wife to Barrack Obama once said, “There is no limit to what we as women can accomplish” and today, 8th March 2018, I join the rest of the world to celebrate this day with these ten young Ugandan women who have not only gone and lived by the adage but they’ve also moved to create a change in societies and yet dominate their circles
Here are my top ten young influential women in no particular order;
10. Irene Nakitende
She is a second year student of Social Work and Social Administration at Makerere. Earlier on in life she had a dream to start and publish her own magazine and as you read this, she is now the C.E.O of African Secrets Magazine. She is also a co-host of Exclussive Access show on KTV (Uganda) and this determination makes her worth a mention as she has inspired many to work better along the way.
9. Phiona Mutesi
By now at least everyone must have watched or at least heard about the ‘Queen Of Katwe’, This movie was a true life story of Phiona a chess Goddess from Katwe slums. She once challenged Garry Kasparov a world chess champion to a chess game. Dropped out of school at 9 years, Phiona learnt that chess was her only way to the top. She never stopped going until she represented Uganda at the NorthWest University were she secured a Chess Championship.
8. Sasha Ferguson
Need an example of a determined lady? Look no further. She is a fashionista who believes that beauty is basic. She is into real property management and travel video blogging. She is a go getter with many regarding her as an inspiration. She also started Draw A Smile Uganda, a charity organisation were she helps the less advantaged.
7. Peace Proscovia
She is a sports woman. A professional athlete who also plays netball for Loughborough Lighting team in the Netball Super League in the United Kingdom. She doubles as the captain of Uganda National Netball Team that won the 2013 Netball Cup Championship in Singapore and the 2017 Africa Netball Champions. Currently doing an MBA in the Loughborough University School of Business and Economics were she pursues a Masters of Science degree in Marketing.
6. Bettinah Tianah
She is admired for her fashion sense. She was once labelled the most richest campus student while she was still at MUBS. She threw a lavish birthday party in 2014 that lasted for a week. She has been a TV host for years and was part of the team that went to South Africa to bring the FIFA World Cup Trophy to Uganda.
5. Sheila Gashumba
Gashumba is now a household name in Uganda. Her life is a dream to many right from her teenage days. What people don’t know about her that she hustles a lot. Nothing like being lucky. She is a TV host, CEO of Gashglam and a brand ambassador for Africell and Uber Uganda.
4. Esther Kalenzi
A graduate from Uganda Christian University Mukono with a degree in Mass Communication. What makes is her stand out is the fact that she left her occupation to major into helping the less advantaged through her organisation, 4040. Close associates say since her school days, Esther always engaged in activities of helping her fellows to raise school fees. She was recently recognised by the United Kingdom with an award.
3. Nancy Kacungira
Former student at Makerere University were she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Design and Visual Communications, Nancy Kacungira is now a host on BBC Africa. In 2015, she won the BBC World News Komla Dumor Award for her exceptional journalism. Her journey started at NTV wherr she spent just 8 months and was picked up by KTN in Kenya. She is a good ambassador for this country. From NTV to the World.
2. Anna Adeke
A parliamentarian, lawyer and a politician at the age so young. Ana is very influential in the youth spheres as she represents these as a member of Parliament in the National Female Youths Constituency in the 10th parliament. While at Makerere, she served as a guild president for the year 2013/2014 which made her the 4th female guild president in the history of the University.
1. Kemiyondo Coutinho.
Commonly known as Kemistry, Coutinho could be Uganda’s greatest export to Los Angeles at the moment. She is a co-founder of the famous AkaDope Thursday nights and an actress. Her own Kyenvu short film just won the Best Short Film Award at the PAFF. PAFF is an Oscar qualifying festival which means because of this award, Kyenvu can now be submitted to the Oscar Academy for consideration. Forget Black Panther for a bit and look out for Kyenvu.
