Many significant African post-independence leaders graduated from this University, including former Ugandan President Milton Obote, former Tanzanian Presidents Julius Nyerere and Benjamin Mkapa, and many others. According to webometrics, the University is now ranked thirteenth among Africa’s leading universities.

Kampala International University

Kyambogo University

Kyambogo University is another top public university in Uganda. The Institution was formed in 2003 by merging three existing institutions. The merger took place between the then Uganda polytechnic, Kyambogo, established in 1928, the Kyambogo institute of teachers education, and the Uganda Institute of special education. The University now has six faculties, including six schools and one institute.

Busitema University

Busitema university is one of the most recent government-owned higher Institutions in Uganda. The school was established in 2007 and was accredited by the Uganda Council for Higher Education that same year. This institution provides a broad range of science and education courses for undergraduate and postgraduate studies, particularly on agricultural science, mechanization, and commercialization. Busitema University is fairly small, compared to many others on this list, with just over 3000 students.

Gulu University

Gulu University is another public university established in 2002. The Institution has three campuses and is located in Gulu’s northern district. The school currently has six faculties and serves approximately 5000 students, which also makes it a small university.

Uganda Martyrs University

Uganda Martyrs University is a private university that was founded in 1993 with only 84 students. Since it is affiliated with the Ugandan Catholic church, the University is overseen by the Ugandan Association of Catholic Bishops.

The university campus is spread across six separate locations, with nine faculties offering courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Even though the school was founded in 1993, it was not legally chartered until 2005. Since then, the Institution has quickly risen to prominence in Uganda.

Makerere University Business School was once affiliated with Makerere University. This institution, however, offers only business and management programs at the diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels. It is located in the Nakawa area of Kampala, serving about 7000 students.

Islamic University

With only 80 students, the Islamic University was established in 1988. The Institution currently serves over 10,000 students and has nine faculties that offer a wide range of courses at the diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels. The primary purpose of establishing this University was to address the educational needs of English-speaking Muslims in Uganda and throughout Africa. Non-Muslim students are also admitted, and there are no limits on their freedom to practice their religions.

Mountains of The Moon University (MMU)

Named after the Rwenzori mountains, MMU was established in 2007. The school started as a private school before the government took over its ownership in 2018. It was founded as a center for African developmental studies to serve Uganda’s rural populations.
