They may brag to be the only university to produce academic bwats but trust me Kyambogo is a haven for poor drunkards. Word reaching our hive is that Kyambogo university students are still on the lead when it comes to consuming cheap liquor and local brew. Kyambogo is next to Banda, a slum well-known for selling of all tot packs and every other kind of cheap alcohol and also one of the biggest malwa selling areas in Kampala.
Students from Kyambogo University are known to be the biggest consumers of these cheap drinks as it is evident during the course of the semester. When one moves around Banda, their eyes won’t fail to catch a sight of campusers seated at shop verandas holding tot packs of different names and colors- the most common being Kitoko.
Another drink that is highly consumed by the Kyambogo University is mkomboti, a thick brownish drink that looks like fermented millet. A glass of mkomboti costs only shs700 a price that attracts many campusers. The most common joints in Banda that include Jk (John Kawere), Imara and Anyaka’s bar are all known to serve this drink. Campusers flood these joints as early as 8am and most times they leave as late as 1am,late in the night.
When we stormed these joints to find out the reason why campusers are so much into this cheap alcohol, Andrew a second year development studies student said;“Mkomboti is cheap and it fills your stomach so when you take like 3 glasses, you feel satisfied and also high so no need to look for supper again.”
Daniel, a third year social science student said; “I have been taking my coffee spirit tot packs since year one and I have never gotten any problem with it… plus its saves me from spending much on beer which does not even get me drunk.”
Other sources revealed to us that some of the campusers frequent one joint (Anyaka’s Bar, Banda) to pour their manifesto to the seemingly beautiful light skinned owner of the bar who always leaves most guys shaking in their pants when she takes their orders.
Banda, being a slum does not have high class bars and modern happening joints that the campusers can hang out from. It’s the main reason these students resort to the local bars that serve these local drinks and tot packs. It is therefore safe to say that Kyambogo students rarely got for night.
