Sad news reaching the Bee shows that a 20-year-old student at Kampala International University (KIU) Ishaka branch was found dead on campus early Friday morning.
John Lukoma’s body was discovered by a security guard hanging from an avocado tree near the male students’ hostel around 6:40 am on May 9th, 2025, prompting an immediate investigation by authorities.
“The body was retrieved from the scene and taken to Kampala International University Teaching Hospital mortuary for postmortem,” said Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson Apollo Tayebwa, who confirmed that a case of suspected suicide had been registered at Bushenyi central police station.
Patrick Okoume, Lukoma’s 21-year-old roommate, revealed that the deceased had been experiencing significant financial difficulties in the weeks leading up to the incident.
“He has been disturbed with issues paying tuition and upkeep. He remained worried whether he will complete his course,” Okoume said, suggesting these pressures may have contributed to his roommate’s distress.
While KIU officials did not provide official comments, a circulated letter reportedly from the administration urged students to seek help through the university’s counseling services.
“Whether you knew Lukoma John personally or not, this news has affected each one of you because this is your fellow student. I understand most of you are confused, sad, and in fear, please know that you are not alone, we are here to support,” the letter stated.
The incident has cast a somber mood over the university as students and staff come to terms with the sudden loss of one of their own.
