Makerere University is in further grief after losing another lecturer to Covid-19. Mr Godfrey Mwesige, a lecturer from the Department of Construction Management in Colleges of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) died from the ruthless disease on yesterday at TMR hospital, Kampala.
Eng Mwesige became the second lecturer to die at the university in just over five days following the loss of Prof Noble Ephraim Banadda on July 1, also to Covid-19.
At just 43, Mr Godfrey Mwesige, had achieved, among others, the following academic qualifications: PhDBSc(Civil Eng, Mak); MSc(Civil Eng, Illinois); Dip (Road Traffic Safety, Lund); PhD (Transport Science, KTH)Member UIPE and Registered Engineer. He was also the Chief Executive Officer UB Consulting Engineers Ltd.
University Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe revealed that Mr Mwesigwa was one of the top cream at the academic institution and in the region. He had just applied to become a Senior Lecturer.
“We have lost yet another bright young member of staff to Covid-19. This is another huge blow to Makerere University. Mr Mwesige was one of the top highway engineers in Africa. We are devastated,” Prof Nawangwe confirmed.
The late Mwesige has been described as a young and bright guy. He was the best student in their cohort who later became experienced in highway safety. He did a lot of research on highway safety especially when Masaka road had become a death trap.
Uganda Engineers Registration Board (ERB) mourned the loss of the young wizard in a statement:
“We stand with the family of:ENG. DR. GODFREY MWESIGEERB Co-opted Board Member (2020-2022). Lecturer, Makerere University, CEDAT. ERB no. 1169. On the sands of time, you have left your footprints with glory, everyone will know your name and shall recall your story.May his Soul Rest In Paradise.”
The loss is not only a blow to Makerere University fraternity but also to Uganda as a whole. May the deceased’s soul Rest in Eternal Peace!
