Evening students of Makerere university have been left angered after MUASA reached a decision to stop teaching evening and weekend classes. This decision came after a failed dialogue between lecturers and the university.
The lecturers stated that the mode of payment by the university currently disadvantages lecturers teaching evening and with this resolution the concerned parties decided that they will either not teach at all or students will have to attend day lectures.
The unfriendly resolution by the lecturers under their umbrella MUASA comes immediately after the University council in a letter back tracked to the council chairman Eng. Dr. Charles Etyem informed the Don’s that their incentive allowances would be slashed by 75% to enable the University activities run smoothly.
“We’re all human. If it is hurting you our dear lecturers, we get hurt too. But we get offended when you make selfish moves. Sincerely, why would you give service to day students and deny us the same. Mind you, 80% of day students are government sponsored. Do you want to say private students are defaulters?” One Alex a student at Makerere cried out.
The students are also angered about the failure for the university to release last semester results as they do not reflect online.
“Evening students of courses in the college of humanities and social sciences are planning to engage authorities and if not attended to by Monday, next week, they will respond with fire,” Javira Nsimbe, a student of Journalism stated.
Mr. JB IMOKOLA , a lecturer of Journalism has advised the students to engage student leaders in order to have a meaningful dialogue and resolution with the university
