In an unexpected turn of events, UCU senate has nominated only two female candidates, Maureen Akatukunda and Prisca Amongin, for the UCU guild presidential race.
In a two-day long vetting process that ended on Wednesday afternoon, a total of 6 candidates were presented for the vetting.
Maureen Akatukunda, Mwembi Perez and Allan Yiga were the candidates from the law faculty, while Prisca Amongin and Ezekiel Etatai were from the business faculty with Asaph Mabirizi from the theology department.
However, after a series of events, the vetting process was concluded and only the two female candidates qualified for the guild presidential race.
“This is a very big achievement for me and Maureen,” Prisca intimated when asked what she feels about being the only females in the race.
UCU has never had a directly elected female candidate. The female guild president in 2014 was only appointed after unclear issues between the varsity administration and the then elected male president failed to be resolved.
However, a fourth-year law student, who is somewhat close to all the candidates commented that “Akatukunda is a very charismatic leader. If she decides to do something, she will really do it”.
Prisca Amongin on the other hand, he said, draws bigger crowds with her smile and demeanour. She is very friendly to the students, making the race abit tight.
However, Campus Bee has been intimated that the male candidates were disqualified from the race because of a number or reasons.
For example, Perez Mwembi was disqualified after the faculty vetting yesterday when he failed to defend himself against allegations that he is indisciplined and has been bribing the electoral commission members.
Alan Yiga was eliminated from the race after a class representative vetting that took place yesterday while Mabirizi from the theology faculty was disqualified because he was remaning with only one semester to finish his course.
Surprisingly, some other male candidates like Ezekeil Etatai did not even turn up for the senate vetting, thereby leaving only female candidates in the race.
Campus bee will keep you posted as the story unfolds.
