Two promising students from Uganda are presently swimming in a sea of endless opportunities in Tanzania after they staved off tight competition from hundreds of competitors across Africa to emerge among the top five contestants for the 2015 edition of Uongozi Institute’s “African Leadership Essay Competition.”
Ainembabazi Madonna Vicky and Omollo Juemah, both 3rd year students of law at Makerere University, are among the top 5 competitors shortlisted by Uongozi Leadership Institute in contention for the overall award that comes with it a cool $2,000 cash prize as well as a certificate of participation. They are up against Joseph Wanga from Kenya, Tsholofelo Tsholofelo from Botswana and Munyaradzi Chifetete from Zimbabwe.
The two, Omollo and Vicky, are currently staying at the stately Serena Hotel in Tanzania on a three-day all expenses paid trip to the land that plays host to East Africa’s Legislative Assembly as they await the award ceremony.
The competition is organised annually by Uongozi Leadership Institute with a purpose of providing a forum for the youth in East and Southern Africa to contribute to important discussions about leadership. Uongozi Institute is a leadership training institute that provides transformative leadership training in East and Southern Africa.
The 2015 edition saw nearly 600 youth between the ages of 18 – 25yrs sending in their essays discussing whether leading in Africa Is different from leading in the rest of the world.
The winner is to be announced later today in Dar es Salaam during the African Leadership Forum summit organised by H.E. Benjamin Mkapa, former President of Tanzania, and UONGOZI Institute. Cash prizes and certificates will also be awarded to each runner-up.
The Uongozi leadership essay competition takes place each year and calls for entries are usually advertised on its website, in the media, and other partner organisations’ news portals. A panel is later constituted to select the best entrant basing on his or her originality, creativity, critical thinking, structure , organization, logical flow, and content while addressing the given theme.
Should one of the two Makerere students return home with the victor’s crown, their victory will be yet another flashlight on the enormous potential that the youth in Uganda possess to compete favourably with the rest of the world after Noah Walakira, a 23yr-old student entreprenuer at the same university as the two bright stars, pipped a multitude of other deserving competitors from all over Africa to the 2014 Anzisha Prize.
