Two university students, Innocent Wasande and Emmanuel Mwijukye, have been apprehended by the police based on allegations of sedating a woman and engaging in repeated sexual assault on Independence Day, which occurred on October 9.
The victim in question, known only as Cindy, was reportedly drugged and then sexually assaulted by the aforementioned individuals inside a bar situated in Nakulabye, Lubaga Division, within the confines of Kampala City. Public records indicate that Wasande is a student at Makerere University, while Mwijukye is enrolled at the western campus of Kampala International University (KIU).
According to Cindy, she left her residence and business area in the Kabawo zone, Lubaga division, around 7 pm on Monday, heading to Nakulabye for some leisure time. It was during this outing that she encountered the suspects, who initiated contact with her.
Cindy recounted, “I didn’t go with any friend or relative. I went alone, but I found two young men who tried to befriend me. I don’t know what they did, and I don’t know how I was taken out of the bar up to being raped and then being taken to a medical facility.”
Detectives from the Old Kampala police division reported that Cindy was rescued by a passerby who witnessed the students taking turns sexually assaulting her. This individual promptly alerted others who intervened, leading to the arrest of the two students.
The detectives asserted, “Cindy was sedated while in the bar, and these students successfully removed her from the bar without the management’s notice. They entered the bar with the clear intent of finding a female victim to satisfy their sexual desires.”
Cindy has disclosed that she operates a mobile money shop and frequently visits Nakulabye to spend her evenings after work. Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy spokesperson for Kampala metropolitan police, has urged bar management to remain vigilant and identify patrons who enter alone or with unknown companions. This, he explained, is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of clients.
Instances of individuals being drugged, sexually assaulted, or robbed within bars are not uncommon, with both civilians and security personnel falling victim to such incidents. These occurrences are particularly prevalent in areas such as Kawempe Tula, Kanyanya, Mpeleerwe, and Makindye Salama road.
