The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has dismissed concerns about a possible internet shutdown, saying there is currently no indication that access to the internet will be switched off.
Speaking at a media briefing, UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo assured the public that the commission has not taken, nor is it considering, any decision to disrupt internet services at this time.
“We assure you that, so far, there is no indication that the internet will be switched off,” Nyombi said.
He added that in the event circumstances change and authorities are compelled to take such a step, the commission would communicate openly with the public.
“If such an indication arises and we take a decisive action in that direction, we will return to this same podium to brief you and explain why that decision has been taken,” he stated.
Nyombi’s remarks come amid heightened public anxiety, particularly during politically sensitive periods, when past internet disruptions have raised concerns around freedom of expression, access to information, and economic activity.
The UCC said it remains committed to transparency and public engagement, emphasizing that any major decision affecting national communications would be clearly explained to stakeholders and the general public.
Uganda has experienced internet restrictions during previous election cycles, making assurances from regulators a subject of close public scrutiny. For now, the commission insists that internet services will continue uninterrupted.
