Uganda’s education landscape is shifting with the first cohort of the New Lower Secondary Curriculum (NLSC) officially examined—and now, the rankings are in! The list of Uganda’s Top 200 Best Performing Schools has been determined based on the number of ‘A’ scores achieved in the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) 2024 results.
Unlike the traditional grading system, which relied on aggregates, divisions, or points, the NLSC introduces a fresh approach—grading students with letter scores A, B, C, D, and E. The key takeaway? A candidate’s performance is now assessed by subject competency rather than an overall grade.
How Schools Were Ranked
This ranking is based purely on the total number of ‘A’ scores attained by students across all subjects. That means schools with larger student populations had a greater chance of securing more ‘A’s and ranking higher. For example, Uganda Martyrs SS dominated the charts with an impressive 2,375 ‘A’s—a number smaller schools with fewer candidates could not easily surpass.
Interestingly, despite the shift to a competency-based system, many of the historical academic giants have maintained their dominance in the rankings, proving that excellence remains a tradition in Uganda’s top schools.
