9:00AM marked the commencement of a well organised Moot Competition dubbed the National Centre for International Arbitration (N.C.I.A) Moot at Cavendish University where participants from various universities would take on one another in a battle of legal minds that I can comfortably say was not for the faint-hearted. Each of the participating Universities came with one major motive, “To make their Institutions proud by winning the Competition”. But as we all know, the rules of any competition dictate that there must always be a winner amongst winners.
This competition attracted legal brains from Uganda’s top Law Schools like Uganda Christian University (UCU), Makerere University, Islamic University In Uganda (I.U.I.U) and Cavendish University.
This was the first time this competition was taking place with the sole objective of improving awareness about the merits of International Arbitration amongst students in East Africa. The Judges that adjudicated over the Moot Competition assessed the participants on knowledge of the facts, correct and articulate analysis of the issues, familiarity with International Authorities, General Knowledge of the substance and process of International law, knowledge of legal principles directly applicable to the facts, organisation, clarity, response to questions, ingenuity and persuasiveness.
Participants were judged by senior advocates in the field like Counsel Jacqueline Lule from Bowman’s Advocates and Counsel Jimmy Muyanja among others. The audience was treated to an interesting final battle between Uganda Christian University and Makerere University who did not disappoint as they pushed up a great show. In the end, UCU’s Daniella Khanani and Abraham Mumbere emerged as victors beating their Makerere University counterparts.
The winning team will represent Uganda in the International Rounds that will take place in Nairobi.
In an interview with the Bee, Mumbere said this was a tight and competitive Moot and therefore the win is worth it whereas Khanani his team mate had God and her moot coaches Mr. Brian Kajubi and Mr. Uwizeyi Franklin to thank as they pray to win the International Rounds in Nairobi.
Campus Bee congratulates Team UCU and wishes them good luck in the International Rounds.
