Uganda Christian University (UCU) beat Makerere University in this year’s Center for Health, Human Rights and Development (CEHURD) National Interuniversity Constitutional Law Moot 2016.
A number of teams from 7 universities including Makerere, Kampala International University, Uganda Christian University (Mukono and Kampala campus), Islamic University in Uganda (Mbale and Kampala campus), and Bishop Steward University Mbarara participated in the moots that started in the morning and ended later in the evening.
A moot competition is where students represent imaginary clients in imaginary court cases involving real life situations.
The students defended their sides in an appeal before the Supreme Court for and against the constitutional right to health.
Uganda Christian University tussled it out with Makerere University in the finals to emerge the winners of the competition with a close margin of 84.2 to 97.46.
Awards were given to the winners and among other notables in the competition.
Taremwa Kansiime won the award for the Best Orator, trailed by Isabella Twongyeirwe in the second place, then Jordan Tumwesigye.
An honorable mention was made to Islamic University in Uganda for good memorial they presented that almost qualified them for Best Memorial award. This award was however won by Makerere University.
This was the 3rd moot organized by CEHURD. The first moot happened in 2014 where St. Augustine University won, while the other in 2015 was won by Kampala International University.
