Uganda Christian University (UCU) is accepting more applications/re-applications for its law program, a second phase after the recently concluded pre-entry exams that took place in April.
The session in the January semester managed to draw about 800 applicants sitting these exams.
Towards the end of April, the Mukono-based university released the results from the same exams, and are displayed on the university notice boards to give the students the chance to know how they performed.
The records indicate that so many students have failed. Over 500 failed. About 300 passed.
The private institution has now found a justification to get more applicants to fill the Main and Kampala campuses.
The Mukono (main) campus has a capacity of 300 law students, 240 for the Kampala campus.
The new applicants could produce the same numbers that sat last semester, and about the capacity for the Kampala branch may be sieved.
Mengo Medical School?
A number of activities have had funding withdrawn. Moot competitions, dinners, among other projects. This cost many dinners in the last semester. The law students had their dinner cancelled after the faculty withdrew the amounts it contributes.
The social science students nearly missed out on theirs. The students however funded their own dinner and recorded a low turn up.
The university harbours expansion plans. At the top of its list is the Mengo Medical School that is taking a toll on the university treasury. There is also the expansion of halls of residence and the roads that the university is currently tarmacking.
If more students apply for the second phase of pre-entry exams that will be done towards the end of this month, this would mean more development funds for the private institution.
Law at Kampala and Mbale Campus.
The university has recently opened up a law faculty at Kampala campus, that is 2 years now. Word around the campus is that there are plans to open up the same in Mbale. The expansion of the law faculty would make the university possess the biggest law school in Uganda.
Students of UCU do not, however, share this expansion vision. Many have expressed their dissatisfaction.
The motto “Excellence in the heart of Africa” does not seem to be the motive now. Being a private institute, critics have alluded this desire for numbers to be money.
“UCU is money minded,” one student shares his observations “there is no other explanation.”
Another says the quality of law education is being destroyed. “This is spoiling the quality of education at the University, however ” says another student.
Students from Kampala campus express similar concern. “We do not have the same facilities like the Mukono campus. This is unfair.”
Some lecturers from the Main Campus usually travel to Kampala to conduct lectures and tutorials., however, do not think this is enough.
The tuition at these branches is uniform which many think should not be the case. UCU, precisely, does not have the capacity for a big law school.
