The Chancellor of Uganda Christian University (UCU), Archbishop Stanley Ntagali will be retiring as the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda (CoU) and in effect lose the position he is currently holding at Uganda Christian University as Chancellor.
“On March 1, 2020, I will be clocking 65 years and as you know, our constitution requires us to retire at 65…” the Archbishop was quoted saying while he was addressing the provincial assembly on Friday last week at All Saints Church in Nakasero.
According to the CoU constitution, the Archbishop serves the church for a period of 10 years and then retires. The Archbishop will only have spent 8 of those years by the time he celebrates his birthday in 2020, when he will have hit the retirement age.
According to the UCU website, the Archbishop became the Chancellor of UCU after he was enthroned in 2012 as Archbishop of the Church of Uganda.
“The UCU Chancellor shall at all time be the Archbishop of the Province of the Church of Uganda”, reads the UCU Charter in part. He in 2012 replaced Luke Orombi, who served the same position before him.
The chancellors of UCU (the Archbishop being the third) preside over all ceremonial assemblies of the university and in the name of the university, confer degrees and other academic titles and distinctions at UCU. He also exercises supervisory powers over the university.
