The hive has received shocking news about the scarcity of condoms and other family planning methods such as contraceptives specifically Postinor 2 in Mukono especially in Kauga where the main campus of Uganda Christian University (UCU) is situated.
This has caused fear among the residents and students because they are likely to be affected by the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unwanted pregnancies. The residents have put this crisis on the increasing number of UCU students in their area.
It is said that Uganda Health Marketing Group (UHMG) a non-government organization which was the major provider of the above mentioned services stopped distributing them at a free cost in the town some time back. The community therefore had to utilize the little they have been receiving from other organizations which have also run out of stock due to the increasing demand.
This is not the first time the crisis has been in Mukono as the first one was in 2006 where the couples would use condoms for only the first round and the rest, they would go live!
Ms. Akello a health worker in the nearby health facility said that they always receive clients who want condoms particularly during the night and they found themselves not having what to give them. These always come from the neighboring bars such as Casablanca among others, surprisingly they always see young girls with old men (sugar daddies).
