Uganda Christian University (UCU) emerged winner of the East African Law Students Association (EALSA) Inaugural Moot competition held at UCU this Saturday defeating Makerere University.
UCU was represented by Katushabe Loyce Donah, Afekuru Hilda and Nauma Priscillah counsel for the respondent, while Makerere was represented by Nakasirye Patricia, Hussein Gulam Dawood and Kibirige Apollo Kasujja counsel for the petitioner.
Makerere got two awards for the Best Memorial and the Best Oralist-Hussein Gulam Dawood, while UCU emerged the overall winners.
“It feels good winning,” says Katushabe expressing the feelings of her team upon attaining such a victory.
The moot was a discussion on issues relating to the rule of law in E.A especially as regards to bail.
This has been the 1st EALSA moot competition to be held in Uganda. “It has been an honor to host the first EALA moot in Uganda here at UCU,” said Alex Kwagala the president of the UCU chapter of the association.
Justice of the High Court, Ezekeil Muhanguzi was the chief guest of the moot.
In his speech, he complained to the judges of the moot for asking too many questions. “You guys interrogated counsel so much,” he said. “You waste too much time when you interfere with the submissions of counsel.”
He also eulogized the host university. “Do not compromise the foundations for which UCU is founded. You guys are the perfect example of decency,” as he observed the dress code of the students. “Makerere students wear torn things (to mean ripped jeans), you guys wear suits and beautiful dresses” he continued.
The judge also hinted on the fact that he would be retiring next year in February after so many years of service; 27 years at the bar and close to 15 years on the bench.
Samuel l Olumo, the Executive Director of the Uganda Law Society offered shs500,000 towards the EALSA. “I commit shs500,000 every year for the operations of the EALSA” he said.
The Justice congratulated the winners and handed them their awards.
