It was one cold afternoon, students from the UCU community confined themselves to warm corners of the Hamu Mukasa Library and paid close attention to the material before them, read their books as they prepared for a number of course works and tests that will be on going throughout this week.
However, the calm was disrupted from a screeching sound from within the library. It was the sound of smoke sensors, alerting students to an imminent danger.
“Dear students, run for your lives, the library has caught fire” said one library staff.
The students were sent into panic, with a number of them looking for emergency exits that were already congested while other students looked for open windows as an escape route but in vain.
At this point, the students struggled through the half open entry and exit door at the front of the library as some smoke was seen escaping through the roof with students chocking as they tried to vacate the building.
Talk started spreading among the students that a projector from the Business Lab had burnt and exploded hence catching fire. Students crowded around the library awaiting an official communication from the library staff about how they would be allowed to collect their belongings that they left inside the burning facility.
The library staff were not available to make comment on the incident as many worried it would be costing their jobs to say something. However one intimated that indeed the library projector had exploded.
“A projector from the business lab exploded. That is all I can tell you” he said.
However, there were no injuries or deaths recorded at the scene and as we speak the situation has been calmed and students have been allowed access in to the library.
