The Bachelor’s of Law degree offered at Uganda Christian University (UCU) has been accredited by the United Kingdom Bar Standards Board as of acceptable quality.
Atuhairwe Hope a recent graduate of law at UCU applied to undertake the Approved Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the UK, the equivalent of Uganda’s Law Development Center (LDC), awarded before one can be given a certificate to practice law.
She could not however be admitted until the curriculum of her law degree was confirmed by the Standards Board.
“I was contacted by the Bar Standards Board of the UK and I sent them the curriculum of law at UCU” says Dr. Anthony Kakooza, the Dean, Faculty of Law.
In a letter titled, “Certificate of Academic Standing”, Atuhairwe “…has been assessed as eligible…by virtue of having obtained an LLB from Uganda Christian University, Uganda which is of an acceptable standard.” reads the letter in part that confirmed the accreditation.
This therefore means the degree of law given at UCU is the equivalent of any other law degree offered by universities offering law in the UK.
Previously only the degree of law from Makerere University was accredited.
“This is quite a commendable achievement for the faculty of law” says Dr. Kakooza “This is another step forward” he continues, when asked how he thought of this new development.
This comes at a time after similar accreditation was made by the Councils of Legal Education of Nigeria and South Africa accepting the law degree of UCU.
After the post graduate, Atuhairwe, like any other student in the UK, would have to proceed to the Vocational Stage of Training for the Bar
“This means our alumni can practice law in many places in the world” adds the Dean.
